Insulation both regulates temperature and prevents unwanted condensation which can cause mold and mildew issues. Water leakage is something you never want in a basement, especially one you have spent both time and money to make livable.  Waterproofing requires a detailed process that assesses your entire basement foundation.  Corrections and repairs can be made if any problems are detected.

  • Ceiling height: You will probably have visible duct work and or low ceilings in your basement. You can decide to either have the duct work framed in have the rest of the ceiling higher or have lower ceilings. Duct work can be moved, but it is an expensive job
    .
  • Dampness: The first step to finishing a basement is to correct any dampness problems and then seal the floor and walls carefully. A dampness problem in a finished basement can create all kinds of problems. It can make the room feel cooler or warmer. More importantly, dampness will breed mold and mildew.
  • Concrete floors:  Concrete floors may be hard on your back, legs or feet if you plan to use the area for activities that require prolonged standing. Consider how you will be using the space when choosing floor coverings as this can take a little more effort than it might for other rooms.
  • Lighting: In areas without windows pay careful attention to lighting.  Choose energy efficient fixtures and light bulbs that will help save you money as well as protect the environment. If you have a basement with at least one wall above ground, “sunlight basement”, providing light will be much easier.
